Logging into Tonidoplug as non-root user

Postby Tuxedo » Sat May 15, 2010 12:41 am

Problem:
Users of Tonidoplugs with kernel 2.6.31 might have an issue with accessing non-root accounts on the plug. Though an user account can be created successfully, remote login will be unsuccessful as non-root user. Even su done locally won't succeed. The command will not switch user and will return to root user itself

Code: Select all

 root@Tonidoplug:~# su - testuser
root@Tonidoplug:~#

Solution:
The problem arises due to the change in the security settings of kernel versions 2.6.31 and above. Kernel parameter vm.mmap_min_addr should be set to 32768 instead of the older kernel value of 65536. This change is safe for kernel versions 2.6.31 and above.

To check your kernel version, type
uname -r
If it is 2.6.31 or later, you need to make the following change. If it is 2.6.30, you should NOT make this change. To make this change edit the file /etc/sysctl.d/10-process-security.conf and change the line that reads
vm.mmap_min_addr = 65536
to
vm.mmap_min_addr = 32768
Using:
nano /etc/sysctl.d/10-process-security.conf
. After making this change reboot your tonidoplug and now you should be able to login to the plug with non-root user both locally and remotely.
